I spent so many years thinking motivation was supposed to hit me like some magical lightning bolt. Like one day I’d just wake up wanting to run, or excited to lift, or ready to chase some goal with fire in my eyes.
That’s not how it works for me. And honestly, I don’t think it works that way for most people.
Motivation doesn’t show up first.
It shows up after you start.
The beginning is the part no one really talks about. That first mile where your legs feel heavy, your breathing is off, and you’re questioning every life choice you’ve ever made. The first round of strength training when everything feels stiff and awkward. The warm-up where your brain whispers, “Maybe not today…”
That’s the uncomfortable part.
That’s the doorway.
But here’s the beautiful thing that keeps happening to me:
Once I push through those first few minutes, my body wakes up. My breath settles. My mind stops fighting me. And I hit that moment where I think:
“See? You DID need this workout.”
Every time I reach that point, I remind myself that it didn’t come from motivation. It came from showing up.

Most days, I’m not hyped to work out. I’m just willing. And that tiny bit of willingness is enough to get the ball rolling. Once the ball is rolling, that’s when the fire kicks in. That’s when the mood shifts. That’s when everything gets lighter and easier.
Some days the spark shows up fast.
Other days it takes a while.
But it always comes after I begin.
So if you’re waiting to “feel motivated,” you might be waiting forever.
Just start. Even if it’s messy, slow, awkward, or halfhearted.
Start anyway.
The motivation will catch up with you.
